At Arise Dental, we know our Peoria patients care about their kids’ dental health. The challenge is that dental problems are sneaky. Even when you make sure children are brushing and flossing regularly, cavities can still crop up. Dental decay might affect your kids’ success in school.
Hidden ways cavity-causing bacteria could be harming your kids:
- Bacteria from ear and throat infections could spread to the mouth, causing kids’ dental health concerns like cavities and gum disease.
- If you’re prone to cavities or other dental health concerns, come and see us. Your bacteria can easily spread to your children.
- Sharing eating utensils and toothbrushes can cause bacteria to accumulate in kids’ mouths, too.
How can kids’ dental health issues affect success in school?
Did you know that cavities are one of the most common chronic diseases affecting U.S. kids? When dental diseases are left untreated, children can suffer at school with the following issues:
- Trouble concentrating
- Difficulty retaining information
- Disobeying teachers and other authority figures, i.e. “acting out”
- Avoiding social situations
What can you do to stop kids’ dental health issues from affecting their academic performance?
Make sure you’re supervising kids’ brushing habits. Although your child may be capable of brushing and flossing alone, it doesn’t mean they’re doing it right! Plus, brushing and flossing isn’t all it takes to keep disease-causing bacteria at bay.
- Time your kids’ teeth brushing for at least 2 minutes, 2X a day until they brush long enough on their own
- Regularly check your kids’ mouths for yellow tartar buildup, brown or black spots on teeth, gum redness or bleeding after flossing, and chronic bad breath
- Stick to regular dental visits (at least every 6 months starting from when your child’s first tooth comes in)
Worried that dental health issues might be affecting your kids’ success in school? We understand how troubling that can be for both you and your kids. Schedule an appointment today so we can get your kids’ health on track for many successful academic years ahead!
